Different windows, multiple configurations, one purpose.
Windows! On the face of it a pretty mundane topic, not one which is discussed in polite company or anytime at all really. Not much thought goes in to the type of opening, hinge types, window frame type or indeed the glass which sits in the holes between the framework which fills those convenient holes in the superstructure kindly left by the builders.
Windows! Wood, aluminium or composite frames with double or triple glazing, all unnoticed but all going about their task – of keeping the bad weather outside, the heat inside or, if the weather is fine, allowing some of the fresh air from outside to naturally ventilate the interior.
Avoid Pedantic Mode
Without going in to pedant mode, what follows is a short list of a few of the different window sizes and types, in no particular order, most of which would lend themselves to remote window openers depending upon their position and height in the architecture of the building.
Top Hung Casement Windows
These types of windows typically are opened towards the outside, pivoting on an upper horizontal axis, and can only be accessed for cleaning from the outside.
Top-hung casement windows usually open outwards, the sash is pivoted around the upper horizontal axis, and can be cleaned only from the outside.
Side-Hung Casement Windows
The predominant popular choice of window design with opening vents hinged on one side. However, they can be bottom, side or top hung and the vents can open towards the exterior or interior of the frame. Cleaning is a simple process.
The only downside to this type of window alignment is because the vents open with no tilt, if it rains while they are open, you may find a puddle the size of the English Channel forming in the property interior.
Bottom-Hung Casement Windows
These window types will typically only open inwards on a bottom mounted hinge format, and have the advantage over side hung windows in that an indoor sea will not form if the rain starts to fall.
Sliding Sash Windows
Usually combines two sliding sashes which can slide within the frame either vertically or horizontally, the latter look great in modern design commercial properties with minimalistic décor and furnishing or indeed period style properties.
Sliding Folding Windows
These are a rarity but look great when open, but nothing special when they are closed. This type of design lends itself well to large openings where patio doors would reside in a property.
